Abstract:
Based on (i) the Indices for the Application of the Agricultural Structural Policy (IAASP) in Greece, which provide analytical data for cultivation costs and product prices of the current domestic crops, in the 13 Regions of the country, (ii) on the results of three National Agricultural Censuses (NACs), and (iii) on an literature research regarding the cultivation costs and yields of cardoon, the present work attempted an estimation of the economic results of the current domestic crops and their comparison to the possible economic results of cardoon, in rainfed agricultural land, in an effort to determine which crops and to which extend could potentially be substituted. Result showed that for dry biomass farmgate price of 50 €/tn and biomass yields even below 10 dry tn per hectare, cardoon can be substantially more profitable than most of the existing rainfed crops. The substitution of existing crops which permanently exhibit negative annual profits (excluding state subsidization) can lead to an energy crops potential of 6 – 7 dry Mtn per year, which is three times higher than the current potential of domestic agricultural residues.
