Abstract:

Utilization of forest residue is required in Japan. Torrefaction, which is the conversion technology to make upgraded solid fuel from woody biomass, is recognized as an option to promote unutilized forest biomass. Pilot plant for torrefaction pellet has been built Dec. 2015 at Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. The most candidate feedstock is thinned wood and branch of Japanese cedar. Especially the branch is composed xylem and leaves. Difference of mass yield behavior or elemental composition change during torrefaction with xylem and leaves is expected. The purpose of this study was to accumulate basic data such as reaction temperatue for quality control of torrefaction product. The thermal treatment of xylem and leaves was conducted using lab scale experiment. The difference of reaction behavior with the xylem and reaves during torefaction was investigated. However reaction temperature at 290 oC was the mass yield and elemental composition of product was similar. Therefore the mixture of xylem and leaves such as branch can be applied simultaneous treatment for torrefaction.
