Abstract:

In Europe, pruning residues from orchards may offer more than 25 Tg of dry woody biomass per year, but less than 1% is currently used to produce energy. For their collection, commercial shredders or mulchers are used, but often the product has low quality and the chips are heterogeneous. Within the European project Europruning a new prototype for pruning harvesting with an innovative chipping system has been developed. It has been designed in order to improve the homogeneity of wood chip working on a wider range of pruning. Furthermore, the new machine can be adapted to small or large scale pruning supply chain, thanks to various work configurations of product discharge (big bag, own container or trailer) that can be used during the harvesting. The present work presents preliminary results of the prototype performance and of the wood chip size distributions in vineyard, plum and peach orchards, in Italy. Using the big-bag, the prototype can produce between 0.97 and 2.79 tonnes of fresh residue per hour, respectively in vineyard and peach orchard. According to the wood particle size distribution analysis, the product obtained by the prototype can be attributed to the P45 wood chip size commercial class.
