Abstract:
Supercritical water gasification is gasification of biomass in hot compressed water whose temperature and pressure are above critical values of water. It is expected as the promising gasification technology for wet biomass, but char production has been a large problem. Char production leads to low carbon gasification efficiency as well as reactor plugging. We have investigated the char production mechanism, and found that glucose produces char in subcritical region, but lignin produces char in supercritical region. This fact means that some char is produced by radical reaction. Then, addition of organic acids which produces small reactive radical should suppress the radical char formation. We added formic acid to guaiacol to be decomposed in supercritical water, and found that addition of formic acid was effective for suppression of char production.
