Abstract:
Solid biomass imports are expected to increase in the Netherlands by 2020, driven by the legally binding renewable energy targets set by the European Commission and the Energy Agreement for Sustainable Growth [1]. Wood pellets are and will continue to be the main import feedstock that is be used for co-firing in several power plants throughout the country. Due to their physical and biological properties, wood pellets need to be handled in a different way in terms of transportation and storage than other common bulk material like coal or iron ore. This research aims to provide insight on how the current solid biomass import terminals in the port of Rotterdam approach the issue.
