Abstract:

Closing material and nutrient cycles is one of the main challenges mankind is faced with today to ensure availability of resources on the one hand and to solve waste problems on the other. Increasingly waste turns into a resource that is treated like other trade commodities. Today, waste biomass can be used as feed for numerous conversion technologies. However, waste biomass contains valuable compounds (e.g. nutrients, organic carbon, energy) that can easily be underutilized or lost, depending on the technology used. Within the FERTI-MINE project different conversion technologies are applied on preselected feed-materials. The processes are optimised to produce soil-amendment that fits the standards of the Compost Directive, European Biochar Certificate and mineral fertilizer admission rules. This way waste material can be upgraded into a valuable product with an economic value.
