Abstract:

Pyrolysis of sewage sludge (SS) has been studied at the Thermochemical Processes Group (University of Zaragoza) as an alternative way to manage this kind of wastes. However, major hurdles have been found, such as the high energy requirements for SS drying, and the high nitrogen content in the pyrolysis liquid, which makes difficult its use as fuel. Co-pyrolysis of SS with refuse derived fuel (RDF) has been studied as a possible solution, considering that RDF has less nitrogen content and higher HHV (higher heating value) than SS. This work evaluates the co-pyrolysis of these two wastes as a potential management technology, by analysing the product yields (char, liquid and gas), their compositions and heating values. Pyrolysis of pure residues and a mixture of them (50%) were carried out at 525 ºC in a stirred batch reactor, under N2 atmosphere (0.25 L(STP)/min) with a heating rate of 8 ºC/min. After measuring the product yields, some of their properties (gas composition, liquid homogeneity, proximate and elemental analysis, and heating values) were determined. The results of the co-pyrolysis have been compared to the results obtained in the pyrolysis of pure residues under the same operating conditions.
