Abstract:

According to The National Renewable Energy Action Plans biomass will represent important role in the EU gross final energy consumption by 2020. This will dramatically increase the wood chip demand. Furthermore, wood chips will be used as raw material for transportation fuels and in some other higher value products in chemical and medical industries. Therefore, there is a need to enhance wood energy supply chains processing technologies and practices. In Finland the prominent wood energy supply chain is based on roadside chipping and direct wood chip transportation to the end-user. However, that practice has certain limitations in terms of operations and feasibility. And, what is the most important, it doesn’t consider the potential use of higher value products in woody biomass. For that reason, in 2015-2017 new operational and business models, technologies and practices, e.g. machine view based separation method for knot chips and novel terminal concept, will be developed, demonstrated and piloted in BIOPOOLI project. It bases on the experiment and pilots carried out jointly with local SMEs and other wood biomass supply chain operators. The project will provide important information as well as experiences and operational models to European peer entities.
