Gasification of Solid Recovered Fuels in a Lab-Scale Fluidized Bed Reactor. Effect of Experimental Conditions on Process Performance and Syngas Quality

Abstract:

This paper studied the gasification of two solid recovered fuels (SRF) in a laboratory scale fluidized bed reactor. The gasification performance and syngas quality were assessed under the influence of several parameters: gasification temperature (from 700 to 850 ºC), equivalence ratio (ER, 0.22-0.35), SRF feedstock (RT or FL), bed material (sand or dolomite) and gasification agent (air or oxygen/steam). Special attention was devoted to the evolution of tar and microcontaminants concentration (H2S, HCN, HCl and NH3) in the syngas. The results indicated that increasing gasification temperature and ER led to higher gas yields and H2/CO ratios whereas tar content decreased. In general, the predominant levels of HCl and HCN in the producer gas tended to diminish at these conditions meanwhile H2S slightly increased and NH3 was scarcely detected. Other parameters affecting positively the gasification performance were the use of dolomite as bed material and the use of oxygen/steam as gasification agent, enhancing tar cracking and reforming reactions. This study provides insight into the evolution of the studied microcontaminants under different experimental conditions and reports recommendations about the gasification conditions in order to improve gasification performance and gas quality for two different SRF.
