Abstract:

The paper presents the results of research carried out in the frame of the EU FP7 project Open-Bio to develop a European bio-based product database supporting procurement. A mapping exercise showed the state-of­the-art approach to product databases for bio-based products. Broad stakeholder consultation identified information requirements on bio-based products among businesses, public procurers and consumers. Results were used to develop a draft database concept which was tested by key stakeholders. Prospects on the final database are also presented. It is concluded that product information for public procurers needs to combine the fact that a product is bio-based with features which show the functional or/and environmental advancement of such a product compared to conventional solutions.
