Abstract:

A various number of biogenic materials can be used as alternative carbon source in metallurgical processes such as the electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. Besides the carbon content, the reactivity is the main parameter to assess the possibility of application in an EAF. Problems occurred regarding the handling of some fine-grained carbonaceous material. In industrial scale, this causes the necessity of explosion prevention which can prevent an economic substitution of fossil coal. Therefore, agglomerates from a fully biogenic blend were produced. These briquettes have a smaller specific surface which leads to a slower and more controlled combustion. In order to predict the behavior of combustion, the reactivity needs to be determined. Conventional methods need a fine grinding of the substance. This leads to a distorted test result. With the objective to avoid an uncontrolled combustion in the industrial EAF, a quick test to determine the combustion behavior has been developed. With this special tube reactor, the reactivity can be investigated in function of the original grain size. The developed testing method provides test results which allow a reliable prognosis of the substitute’s combustion behavior in an industrial scale EAF. The risks and costs for industrial tests can be reduced significantly.
