Abstract:
To avoid the high transport-related emissions caused by imported biomass, local available biomasses like wood chips from short rotation plantations or green cuttings are considered for co-firing with coal in large-scale coal-fired power plants. The high moisture content requires a drying process before the biofuels can be suitably utilised in a pulverized fuel fired boiler. The purpose of this work is the evaluation of the most favourable scenario regarding transport-related CO2emissions, as well as CO2 emissions due to energy input for fuel drying. Regarding previous works, it has not been clear whether a decentralised or a process integrated drying concept is more beneficial. The drying process regarded in this work is a flue gas heated rotary drum dryer. The dryer is modelled in EBSILON®Professional as a stand-alone drying plant as well as integrated in the model of an existing full scale pulverized coal-fired power plant. Two scenarios are evaluated. In scenario 1 the drying process is placed decentralised at the location of biomass harvesting and prior to being transported to the power plant site. Scenario 1bm regards the dryer being heated by wet biomass, scenario 1oil considers heat supply by an oil burner. In scenario 2 the freshly harvested biomass is transported to the power plant where the integrated drying process uses exhaust gases to provide the required drying heat. The results show that only a limited amount of biomass can be dried in scenario 2 without causing significant impacts on the power plant process. To determine the most favourable scenario, CO2emissions caused by drying as well as transportation are taken into account.
