Abstract:
In the past decade, the production of biofuels has grown significantly and this increase is expected to continue in the future. In recent years, however, the sustainability of biofuels is debated especially because of undesired indirect land use change (ILUC) and the related potential increase in GHG emissions. The suggested use of ILUC factors ignores options to mitigate ILUC. This case study assesses four key measures to reduce the extent of ILUC and control the type of LUC. It examines the potential to produce miscanthus-based bioethanol in 2020 in the province of Lublin, Poland with low ILUC risk.
