Abstract:

Alley coppice is an innovative production system that combines the production of trees for valuable timber with short rotation coppice (SRC) in the same land. It has been introduced, in the recent past in Italy and this paper refers the growth and production results of a trial sited in Brusnengo (BI), in North Piedmont. In this trial, planted in Spring 2005 on a inceptisol soil, 4 poplar and 4 willow genotypes and different timber species: Acer spp., Prunus avium, Quercus robur, Carpinus betulus, Pyrus communis were tested. The planting density is about 2380 -1 -1 -1 -1 trees hafor SRC and 139 tree hafor timber species. Average production reach 6.6 Odt hay at the end of seven -1 -1 -1 -1 year, with 14.5 Odt hay for ‘Orion’, best poplar clone and 6.7 Odt hay for ‘Drago’, best willow clone; corresponding respectively to a production at the end of 7 year of 6.1 and 2.8 t per 100 m of row. Considering the low planting density the results are quite good.
