Abstract:

This research presents the preliminary results of a comparison study of two methods that qualitatively confirm the origin of materials obtained from the thermal conversion of biomass. In light of the current rules, the materials or fuels obtained in this process, biochars for instance, are not classified as biomass that can be used to produce green energy. Currently, these fuels can only be tested by analysing the 14C content. Unfortunately, this method may not be sufficiently sensitive for materials that were obtained by the co-pyrolysis of biomass and waste polymers, as proven in this research. The current study resulted in the development of a classifier that allows for the rapid and accurate control of fuels derived from biomass thermal conversion. The classifier was developed based on classification and regression tree models, and it uses only the basic analytical data of the solid fuels referred to in most laboratories. The data include elementary and technical analyses, the heat of combustion and the metal oxide content in ash. The classifier yielded a classification accuracy of greater than 96%.
