Abstract:

The development of renewable energies is as a consequence of national energy plan and agricultural policies, biomass production particularly impacted on the agricultural sector lighted the potentials for farmers to become energy producers with bioenergy. The incentives for biomass crops for energy use ensured the economic sustainability of the products obtained from the first plantations established in Italy. The production of renewable energies (electrical and thermal) was therefore encouraged by mean of incentives and, at the same time, financial aid was reduced or cancelled to biomass cultivation. The amount of dedicated plantations to biomass production currently are insufficient to feed all biomass power plants which receive significant support with favourable tariffs in order to maintain sustainable raw material prices. The woody biomass for energy production fortunately also derive from the large availability of domestic forestry utilizations, but the chains sustenance is assured by the long-term supply agreements between biomass providers and transformers. The cultivation and production of woody biomass were no longer profitable in the absence of incentives, now with the new regulations of the Common Agricultural Policy can again be attractive and economically viable
