Detailed Long-Term Experimental Characterization of a Small-Sized Externally Fired Gas Turbine Power Plant

Abstract:

The Externally-Fired Gas-Turbine (EFGT) technology represents a promising solution for the decentralized use of solid biomass in the power generation. In order to investigate the operating flexibility and the effects of the fuel quality on the operating parameters, EnelIngegneria e Ricerca carried out a detailed long-term experimental characterization of a 70-kWe EFGT power plant with four different biomass fuels: high-quality wood chips, olive kernel, chips of urban green waste, chips of giant reed (Arundodonax L.).For each tested fuel, a large number of operating parameters were monitored, included: main pollutant emissions, concentration of the acidic gases HCl and HF, fine-particulate concentration and size-distribution. Part of the experimental activity were also in­flame measurements of temperature and chemistry as well as laboratory analyses of fuels and ash, included SEM-EDX (Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy-Dispersive X-ray) spectroscopy of the fine particulate.A proper process simulation performed in Aspen Plus®allowed the validation of the experimental data and the calculation of heat and mass balances.The experimental activity was also significant in highlighting the main operational issues. NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) technology and turbine endoscopy were used to evaluate the plant integrity in the long term.
