Abstract:

The high demand for micro scale combined heat and power plants fired with renewable energy sources based on biomass requires new technological concepts. Therefore the combination of a Stirling engine with a fluidised bed combustion features a lot of advantages compared to conventional combustion techniques. While first tests provided promising results of the engine operation, also an optimization of the boilers’ freeboard is necessary. Due to severe limitations of size, emissions and particle release, the usage of numerical methods (CFD) to predict combustion reactions is a helpful tool to develop this design. In this contribution the comparison of measurements and experimental investigations for simple freeboard geometries is presented. The results show, that the chosen CFD-model is able to predict combustion reactions and can serve as a base for further extensions, namely the observation of particles and heat transfer for internal air-preheating.
