Abstract:

Is the German bioenergy village model adaptable to other EU regions? This study challenges the opportunity to extend the experience in the South of Italy, which is characterized by different cultural approach to bioenergy, where most of investments in the field of renewable energy are promoted by industrialists, while local communities are not directly involved. In addition, a lower demand for heat energy may not motivate local citizens to actively promote investments in this domain. Firstly, an inventory of energy needs is made, in order to show the relevance of the issue to non professionals. Secondly, an inventory of locally available biomass is made, to focus the attention of local citizens on residues and wastes which at present do not have an economic value. Some hypothetical technologies are selected, to favorite the public debate. Finally, a survey has been conducted to measure the social acceptance of local community on the possibility of adopting the bioenergy village concept. According to our findings, all the 3 communities object of investigation, showed a deep interest towards the concept of bioenergy villages, which seems motivated by a strong concern towards environmental emissions, the participation to the selection of the most suitable technology, and the siting of the facility.
