Abstract:
Worldwide biodiesel production has increased rapidly in the past decade. Currently, more than 95% of the biodiesel produced globally is from edible oils such as rapeseed, sunflower, palm and soybean. However, the desirable feedstock oil for biodiesel production is non-edible oil. The rubber seed oil (RSO) is a well-known non-edible oil currently not commercially utilized because no major application has been identified. We report here estimates of the biodiesel production potential from rubber seed in natural rubber producing countries, based on experimental data from a two-step esterification method. The global potential for biodiesel from RSO is in the range of 253,249 to 405,199 t/year.
