Abstract:

The thermal degradation behavior and ignition temperature of five types of wood (spruce A, spruce B, pine, poplar A, poplar B) and five non-woody biomasses (foliage A, foliage B, miscanthus, straw, hay) was determined by means of a simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) in oxidizing atmosphere. Discussion of the results was made with respect to the interdependency of the fuels alkali and earth alkali content and its influence on the thermochemical decomposition behavior. The results indicate that the quantity and type of chemical elements present has a strong influence on the thermochemical decomposition behavior of solid biofuels. Of the examined elements especially potassium seems to be accountable for a remarkable catalytic effect whereas the influence of other elements was relatively minor.
