Abstract:

One of the major obstacles for the application of biomass gasification systems is the relatively high tar content of the product gas that inhibits the use in engines or turbines or in further processes like in methanisation or conversion to other secondary fuels or chemicals without further gas cleaning. The determination of the tar content with conventional methods is very time consuming and does not allow continuous online monitoring of the gas quality. One approach to avoid these drawbacks is an automatic system that monitors the tar concentration in the producer gas online during the gasification process. The semi-continuous tar analyzer based on a FID (flame ionization detector) was first developed at IFK in the 90s. An advanced prototype was further developed in the last two years and brought closer to commercialization. This paper will show the measurement principle of the further developed online tar analyzer and results of first laboratory tests with calibration gas to demonstrate its general accuracy and reliability. Furthermore, results of first tests at a 20 kWth pilot gasifier are shown and compared with the results determined with the tar protocol.
