Abstract:

Olive husk is an unexploited source of biomass that can potentially satisfy a significant part of the energy market in Greece and Cyprus. Within the context of this study, mechanisms for estimating the potential contribution of olive husk to the energy mix of Cyprus and Crete are presented. To this end, cropping statistics with the aim to relate climatic conditions and the olive fruit yield, towards delivering a predictive model for the anticipated olive husk amounts available in Cyprus and Crete are analyzed. Also a comprehensive analysis of the available olive husk amount as well as the energy conversion technologies utilized in Cyprus and Crete, with the aim to quantify the potential fields of olive husk exploitation in the energy sector of both regions is performed. The findings of this study are expected to provide useful insight to the entire supply chain of olive husk as a potential biomass source.
