Abstract:
The pelletizing of high quality pellets is a complex process, which is strongly affected by the characteristics of the raw material and the pellet machine. Both have to be known in detail. The physical-mechanical properties of the pellets are influenced by several process steps, such as milling, conditioning and the operation conditions of the pellet press. At the same time in European standards as physical-mechanical properties only dimension, bulk density, durability and fines requirements are defined. By expanding the raw material feedstock alternative evaluation methods can give additional information optimized production and handling of pellets. For example the compressive resistance of a loose bulk of pellets provides information about the behavior in silos or during transportation. Additionally, by visualization (SM and SEM) of breaking eggs of pellet a better understanding of binding mechanisms is resulted and can be interrelated with the stability of the pellets and necessary adjustments in productions processes.
