Abstract:
Raw syngas from biom mass gasification requires the tar impurities to be filtered be efore it can be used as a fuel in spark ignition engines. TTaar filtration constitutes a major component of the power plant needing capital investments and regular maintenanc ce. Filtration is necessary even for a lowtar (of less than 5 50 mg/Nm3) twostage gasifier systems. Work related to a novel method of solving tar related issues by investigating g the combination of a lowtar two stage biomass gasifier feeding raw or impure syngas directly to a Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine without an ny filtration is described here. The concept is based on th e fact that tar related problems can be avoided if tar cond densation can be avoided by keeping the raw syngas flow ppath from the gasifier exit through the engine, above the ta ar dew point of 250șC. Due to autoignition nature of HCCI combustion a suitable engine which can operate at high in ntake temperatures can be designed. In this paper, experime ents carried out in the first stage of the research wherein HCCI combustion with artificially created syngas are des scribed. Experimental results indicating the efficiencies, em missions as well as effect of tar impurities are discussed form ming the basis further research.
