Abstract:

A sustainable and integrated resource system for biomass can be implemented by using residual biomass for the production of energy. In Germany more than 7800 anaerobic digestion units produce about 60 million tons of digestate every year. The ThermoCatalytic Reforming (TCR) is a promising process for the energetic usage of this residual biomass with a high water content, a low heating value and a low ash melting point. The ThermoCatalytic Reforming is an integrated pyrolysis and reforming process which was developed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT. The aim of this work was to convert the feedstock digestate by use of ThermoCatalytic Reforming. The parameters of the unit where varied with focus to upgrade the product quality. Pelletized digestate was tested in the reactor and the products were analyzed by different methods. Digestate showed a high potential as feedstock for higher quality products.
