Abstract:
This paper presents aprimarily experimental study of drying synthetic and VIP sludges using a LaDePa dryer which is located in the Laboratory of the Pollution Research Group, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa. Influences of medium wave infrared (MIR)radiation intensity and source heighton the final product property (i.e., moisture content, volatileand fixedsolid contents, and thermal properties) were investigated.Experimental results have shown that the LaDePa dryer is able to dry sludges with different moisture contents to a final product with a desired dried matter content. MIR radiation intensity and the source heightlargely affected the final product property, thus these two parameters need to be adjusted and optimized in order to achieve an appropriate product property for different applications.
