Abstract:
At present, the European Union is strongly supporting researches on green hydrogen production technologies. In this way, decarbonization could be improved in key economic sectors such as transport or the petrochemical industry. Biomass gasification is a highly interesting thermochemical transformation pathway, since it allows obtaining a combustible synthetic gas which also contains green hydrogen. Spain and other Mediterranean countries have a great biomass potential associated with the industrial production of olive oil. For each ton of olives processed in the oil mills, around 0.15 tons of olive stones can be obtained. This biomass is a material with high lignin content and an interesting higher heating value (HHV). In the present work, olive stones were fed in a downdraft gasifier with 10 kW of thermal power. The objective of the research was to determine the best startup protocol in the reactor to minimize the time needed to reach a steady-state regime and achieve a stable temperature (800-1000 ºC) in the combustion zone of the gasifier. The work showed that the modification of the air flow has a key effect on the startup of the equipment, as well as on the stability of the flame and the composition of the synthesis gas.
