Development and Demonstration of an Electrostatic Precipitator, which is Optimally Adapted to a Biomass Boiler

Abstract:

Wood combustion in small scale boilers is widely used for domestic heating. The quality of fuel, combustion conditions, boiler heating capacity etc. strongly influence on particle emissions. The fine particles still contribute significantly to the PM-burden in many locations, especially during winter heating period. For reduction of fine particle emissions, the electrostatic precipitators (ESP) for biomass combustion boilers with heat capacity up to 200 kW are developed and investigated. The ESPs operate on the principle of particle charging in a corona discharge ionizer and charged particle precipitation in the grounded collector under the influence of space charge effects. The study and optimisation of ESP parameters were carried out with "Stand-alone" precipitators, installed downstream the boilers. A single stage ESP ensures mean particle mass collection efficiency 80±5%. Among the "Stand-alone" models, an ESP-module is developed and adapted to a modern wood fired boiler. The scope of development is to ensure the long-term operation stability of the equipment with minimum service requirements, low power consumption and cost-efficient manufacturing. The reliable operation of the adapted precipitator was proven under the typical field conditions.
