Abstract:

The sector of biofuels, specifically bio lubricants, has been emerging rapidly in many developing countries as a means of "modernizing" and providing greater access to clean liquid fuels while helping to address environment, energy security and global warming concerns associated with petroleum fuels. Vegetable oils play a major role in developing bio based lubricants as they are derived from renewable resources. Additionally vegetable oil has the inherent lubricity which makes it suitable for its use as lubricant. In the present paper a non-traditional vegetable oil, Karanja oil (Pongamia Pinnata), has been tailored chemically and made it fit for the lubrication purpose as grease as well as lubricating oil form. The lubricant formed from the biomass was evaluated for its practical application purpose and the results were compared with petroleum based product. Hence a comparative study on use of bio based product against petroleum based product has been done is a very applicable way.
