Pressurized Oxygen Blown Entrained Flow Gasification of Pyrolysis Oil

In this work, pyrolysis oil was prepared from pine wood and gasified in an oxygen blown pressurized entrained flow gasifier (PEBG) at 0.25 MWth, oxygen equivalence ratio around 0.5 with an oxygen concentration of 7080% of the inlet gas (i.e. 2030% nitrogen) and at a pressure of 1.95 bar (g). A pyrolysis oil pump skid was designed and developed to comply with the requirements set by the gasifier. The process temperature (measured by thermocouples) continuously increased during the gasification test and was around 1300 °C after 210 minutes. Hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide were the main gas components with H2/CO ratios very stable during the gasification test (0.70). The methane concentration varied with the temperature and was about 1.2% at higher temperatures. Ethylene and acetylene were also observed and were well below 0.15% each. The concentration of acetylene was slightly higher than ethylene throughout the test. The cold gas efficiency and carbon conversion was estimated to 50.1 ± 2.7% and 84.8 ± 4.9%, respectively. However, the operating conditions were not optimized in this work and the efficiencies could therefore likely be improved to higher levels in near future tests.
