A Five Step Pyrolysis Mechanism for Wood Burning Models

Abstract:

The pyrolysis of beech wood was investigated by thermogravimetry and the results were interpreted using a well known three step model from the literature and a newly developed five step model. The three step model describes the wood pyrolysis as superposition of the decompositions of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The five step model considers tar formation from cellulose in addition. In order to recalculate experimental results, the three step model requires several sets of rate constants which correspond to different heating rates. This appears to be an artefact which is provoked by oversimplification. The five step model gives reliable results over an extended range of heating rates and extrapolations up to flash pyrolysis conditions yield correct trends for tar/oil formation without the need to consider physical parameters like heat transfer, sample size etc. The five step model has also been tested for application to biomass combustion models.
