Abstract:
Germany is a pioneer in the separate collection of waste and recycling, but currently only about 50 percent of the possible amount of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is collected separately (Schüch 2010, ifeu 2007). To improve the energetic utilization of the OFMSW by anaerobic digestion, the material properties as well as the amount and the potential must be known. Especially for the rural areas a lack of information exists. This was the purpose to investigate the OFMSW in rural areas of MecklenburgWestern Pomerania which is situated in the northern part of Germany. Despite the regionwide biowaste composting in the own garden, the organic content of MSW in the investigated area was with calculated average 39.7 wt.% FM (up to 50 wt.%) high. The seasonality and the influence of the selected territory types to the composition of the MSW were lower than expected. The average methane yield of the biodegradable MSW fraction was, with 336 Nm³ CH4/ Mg ODM, considerable higher than of the separate collected OFMSW with 282 Nm³ CH4/ Mg ODM. The content of pollutants and contaminants in the investigated samples was low.
