Abstract:
This study evaluates the influence of the fuel type on the gaseous emission characteristics of a domestic boiler. To this end, pellets of pine and of furniture waste, both currently manufactured and commercialized in Portugal, and peach stones, made specifically for this study, were burned under two comparable boiler operating conditions and measurements of the principal parameters of the combustion process (flue-gas composition, excess air coefficient and boiler thermal efficiency) conducted under steady-state conditions. The results show that the type of pellets affects significantly the CO, NOx and hydrocarbons emissions, regardless of the boiler thermal input, with the pine pellets performing significantly better than the pellets of furniture waste and peach stones. The pellets of peach stones, however, do not affect negatively the boiler thermal efficiency which reveals their potential to be attractive alternative fuels for use in domestic boilers. Finally, the boiler CO emissions do not comply with the EN14785 in the case of firing with peach stones for the higher thermal input and the boiler thermal efficiency does not meet the requirements of the EN14785 in the case of firing with furniture wastes for both thermal inputs studied.
