A Comprehensive Wood Combustion Model for Domestic Stoves

Abstract:

Wood has always been recognized as a major source for domestic heating in Europe. However, wood heating systems often imply high emissions. This paper presents the efforts toward a reliable baseline computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for a domestic wood log stove (10 KW) which can be used for diagnosis and optimization as well as the design of new efficient wood log stoves. The model accounts for the different phases of wood combustion (pyrolysis, gasification, gaseous combustion and char combustion), radiation and stove walls heat transfer. The conversion of wood is described using a bed model approach. The bed is considered to be an arrangement of three layers with the same height: drying layer, pyrolysis layer and char combustion layer. Standard k-e model is employed for turbulence modelling. Turbulence – chemistry interactions are described by a pre-assumed PDF (Probability Density Function) – mixture fraction method. Radiation is account for by the Discrete Ordinates (DO) model. In parallel, experiments have been performed to provide data for model validation. The model performances are analysed by comparing the prediction to the experimental data. The model shows reasonable agreement with the experimental results in terms of temperature, CO and CO2 emissions.
