Abstract:

The aim of this study is to evaluate both the ability for regrowth and the rate of growth during the first vegetative period after the cutting, in clonal poplar plantations established in different ecological conditions. The plantations were located in Madrid, León, Soria and Girona, the climatic and soil conditions differing from one location to another. At each site, the planting densities were in all cases 33.333 plants/ha and the clones included in the trials were: I-214, MC, 2000 verde, Guardi and AF2 (P. x euramericana), Unal and USA 49-177 (P. x interamericana), Monviso and Pegaso ((P. x generosa) x P.nigra). The plantations were coppiced after three consecutive vegetative periods. Clonal regrowth behaviour at the different sites was assessed by recording the percentage of mortality number of shoot per stool and total basal area per stool. Significant differences were detected from one clone to another in terms of regrowth ability as well as in their subsequent growth. Significant differences were also identified between sites, as well as in the site*clone interaction, highlighting the need to consider the longterm behaviour in order to ensure the sustainability of plantations.
