Abstract:

In this paper, attention was focussed towards biodiesel from avocado (Persea Americana) seeds oil. The optimum temperature for avocado oil extraction was 52 °c, while a ratio of 1:5 of methanol and oil gave the best results. The chemical properties of biodiesel and blends showed that a 20% blend matched the properties of diesel best. The blends selected for testing were 5, 10 and 20% biodiesel or oil in diesel. Pure oil and diesel were run to provide a baseline performance. Testing was conducted on a production model tractor engine with threecylinder variable speed using a Full Throttle and a Part Throttle Performance test on each blend for results comparison. Testing showed reductions in smoke levels (up to 70.6%) when compared to diesel. The torque produced was roughly equal to or more than that produced by diesel. The results of testing indicate that a 10% blend of biodiesel in diesel gives the best results in terms of torque, smoke level, exhaust gas temperature and specific fuel consumption. The performance of biodiesel blends is sufficiently like diesel for it to be used as a feasible alternative to it
