Abstract:

There is need to investigate the suitability of various biomasses for energy production. Maize is the dominating crop for biogas production in Latvia, but the latest government decisions restrict its future use. The cultivation of more varied crops with good economics and low environmental impact is thus desirable. Lately, broad beans (Vicia faba) are used to improve the fields. However climatic conditions often fail to achieve the required quality. A study was aimed to find out the potential of biogas from waste of broad beans, which are not usable for food and damaged zephyr and to compare with biogas production from maize silage. Raw materials were fermented into 16 laboratory bioreactors in a single filling system at 38 oC. An average, digestion during 34 days yielded in 1.022 L g-1DOM biogas (0.536 L g-1DOM methane) from broad beans production waste and 0.813 L g-1DOM biogas (0.421 L g-1DOM methane) from maize silage. From crushed damaged zephyr was obtained 0.947 L g-1DOM biogas (0.457 L g-1DOM methane) and from co-fermentation of broad beans with maize silage was obtained 0.902 L g-1DOM biogas (0.466 L g-1DOM methane). The study shows that it is possible to extract a high amount of methane from the zephyr production waste and taking into account the high proportion of dry matter in natural biomass, its usage for biogas production might be useful. The addition of the broad beans with maize silage increases the methane yield.
