Abstract:

A study was carried out using laboratory equipment to find out the potential of biogas from coffee production waste and damaged sunflower seeds, and effect of biocatalyst Metaferm on anaerobic fermentation process. Raw waste materials from Kekava coffee factory and non-standard sunflower seeds were fermented into bioreactors at 38°C. On average, anaerobic fermentation during 40 days yielded in 0.205 L g-1DOM biogas (0.081 L g-1DOM methane) from coffee waste and 0.25 L g-1DOM biogas (0.099 L g-1DOM methane) from coffee waste with added 1 mL Metaferm. In experiments with sunflower seeds 0.916 L g-1DOM of biogas (0.574 L g-1DOM methane) were obtained from crushed sunflower seeds and 0.906 L g-1DOM biogas (0.554 L g-1DOM methane) from non-crushed damaged sunflower seeds. The study shows that it is possible to extract a small amount of methane from the coffee production waste and such use might useful taking into account the high proportion of dry matter in natural biomass. The addition of catalyst Metaferm to the coffee waste increased the methane yield by 22.2%. Larger methane yield was observed from crushed damaged sunflower seeds. Crushing of sunflower seeds increased an average specific methane yield by 3.6%.
