Abstract:

Pulpwood use and transportation in Eastern Finland is expected to increase significantly if a new mill is built in the region in the near future. This paper presents a case study combining simulation modelling of pulpwood transportation and GIS-analysis of forest-fuel supply. The purpose of the study was to find suitable locations for integrated terminals where pulpwood could be transshipped with fast throughput from smaller to larger trucks, and which could be also used for buffering power plants’ biomass feedstock. The main outcome of the study was that there are no substantial transport-geographical barriers for implementation of integrated terminals in the study area. Further studies would be, however, needed to get more information about the economy of terminal-based supply chains of forest fuels and possible bottlenecks related to terminal ownership and administration issues.
