Innovation Priorities in Brazilīs Bioenergy Sector: an Integrated Modelling Assessment

Abstract:

Brazil has a long experience in sugarcane ethanol and biodiesel biofuel programs. However, results from the long-term expansion model for the Brazilian energy sector MESSAGE (MSB8000) suggest that the optimized portfolio of energy systems in 2050 may present a low diffusion of innovative biofuel technologies. The countryīs future vehicle fleet may be put under pressure to switch from ethanol-based Otto engines to electric engines, fuel cells or hybrid technologies, following international market trends. On the other hand, the demand for firm power capacity will grow at a fast pace over the next decades, opening up new prospects for biomass-based power generation. Scenario results suggest that in 2050, under carbon prices of US$100/tCO2e, liquid biofuel demand will decline by 40%, whereas biopower demand increases twofold. These trends urge the ethanol and biodiesel production sectors to react and set technology priorities for its future development. Therefore, advanced technologies of biofuels production integrated with power generation in biorefineries equipped with BioCCS facilities are at the forefront to supply the country’s energy needs.
