Abstract:

A sustainable substitute for natural gas would be of great value for present and future energy systems. There are several technologies for producing such a natural gas substitute via biomass. Mainly these technologies can be distinguished between biochemically and thermochemically conversion technologies and the product is called biomethane respective bio-SNG (synthetic natural gas). These technologies differ in a wide range according to their applied substrates and their process steps. A comprehensive evaluation of these technologies is thus very complex and was not yet carried out in a large scale. Therefore, a novel approach for an evaluation of the potential of biomethane resp. bio-SNG for future energy supply was developed and performed by us. The here evaluated technologies (approximately 100) can be distinguished by their conversion technology (biochemically and thermochemically), their substrates (energy crops and various kind of residues), upgrading scale as well as upgrading technology respective gasification and methanation process. In a further step a multi-criteria analyses was carried out, which included an expert survey via a Delphi-Survey. As a result of the approach a classification of the technology alternatives is given by applying the multi-criteria analysis by considering the given criteria prioritization by the experts.
