Abstract:

Backhauling and high-capacity-truck transportation (HCT) are special systems in biomass transportation by road, being the most competitive in long-distance transportation. In forest industries, backhauling has been applied in timber transportation to minimize empty loads in total haulage. In Finland, HCT is a novel solution which is currently being demonstrated in real-life conditions. The methods are more rarely used in transportation of solid biofuels, but there could be untapped potential for cost-savings if compared to conventional transport methods. Evaluation of the solutions is challenging due to the complexity of the transportation systems. This paper presents examples about backhauling and HCT in Finland, and static and dynamic modelling methods for investigating opportunities for cost-savings in biomass supply logistics within the systems in focus.
