Abstract:

The increasing energy demand and the problems associated with the use of fossil resources make a greater use of renewable energies (RES) essential. Due to the wide range of use, the use of bioenergy, and especially of biogas, is a good option to transform the energy system. Because of the limited size of the plants, the use of RES and thus also the use of biogas is a decentralized topic. The decision about the optimal plant location is related to different factors. In the past, the site selection has been made especially at the substrate availability. In the end, this fact led to a neglect of other local issues. However, it has been shown that for a good regional integration, the use of electricity and the heat utilization is another important key factor. For a location decision in the future, additional local factors should be considered besides only focusing on the possible energy yield. The question is which suitable values can be used to evaluate these impacts. Our research reveals that beside hard facts, like economic impacts and environmental effects, social consequences play an important role too.
