Modern bioenergy is expected to lead the energy transition

27th EUBCE in Lisbon will shine the light upon modern bioenergy

According to IEA “Renewables2018” report, modern bioenergy is one of the greatest blind spots of our energy system. Nevertheless, it is “the overlooked giant of the renewable energy field”, as stated by IEA’s Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol. In fact, modern bioenergy accounts for about 50% of 2017 total renewables consumption and it is expected to maintain the lead.

As renewable energies cover the 40% of global energy consumption growth by 2023, the European market will be the second consumer of renewable energy after China by the same year. This greater use of renewables, including bioenergy, will be fostered by 2020 and 2030 renewable energy targets as well as by country-level policies and energy efficiency measures.

Biofuels are going to cover a consistent share of global renewable energy consumption within transport system, as the overall production is expected to increase because of mandatory policy targets, technological development, in-depth feedstock investigation and further applications in aviation and marine sectors. In the end, biofuels and electric mobility are setting up as complementary, rather than alternative, solutions.

A strong sustainability framework as well as a proper market design are essential to foster renewable energies development as well as to unlock the untapped potential of valuable resources such as bioenergy.

The EUBCE, as the world leading event for the biomass sector, provides a remarkable opportunity for knowledge transfer amongst scientific community, industry and policy makers in order to accelerate modern bioenergy contribution to the energy transition towards renewable energies.
