EUBCE 2015 Scientific and International Political Opening

The 23rd EUBCE Scientific Conference Opening, chaired by David Baxter, European Commission, DG JRC, Clean Energies Unit, EUBCE Technical Programme Chairman and Bernd Krautkremer, Fraunhofer IWES, Bioenergy System Technology, Germany, will start at 09:00 with the Plenary Session "Applications of Science in Industry" with:
  • Georg Hofmeister, KWB - Kraft und Wärme aus Biomasse, Research&Development, Austria
  • Freddy Tengberg, Göteborg Energi AB, GoBiGas, Project Director & Site Manager, Sweden
  • Marko Janhunen, UPM Biorefining, Vice President, Stakeholder Relations, Finland and Chair of Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels
  • Alexander Zschocke, Lufthansa Group, Senior Manager Aviation Biofuels, Germany
and will end with the Linneborn Prize and the EUBIA Award ceremonies.

The Political Opening Addresses will be chaired by this year's Conference General Chairman, Ingwald Obernberger, Managing Director, BIOS Bioenergiesysteme GmbH and head of the working group "Energetic Biomass Utilization", Institute for Process and Particle Engineering, Graz University of Technology, Austria, and will feature presentations by:
  • Vladimír Šucha, European Commission, Director General JRC
  • Günter Liebel, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Director Section of Environmental Policy, Austria
  • Josef Plank, President, Austrian Biomass Association OBMV, Austria
  • David de Jager, IEA-RETD, The Netherlands
Following the Opening Addresses, a round table of distinguished international personalities moderated by Paolo Frankl, International Energy Agency, Head of the Renewable Energy Division, will discuss about "Bioenergy and Economic Growth":
  • Elisabeth Köstinger, European Parliament
  • Giovanni De Santi, Director, European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Institute for Energy and Transport, Director Institute for Energy and Transport
  • Morteza Fesharaki, CEO, HERZ Energietechnik, Austria
  • Theodor Zillner, Deputy Head, Department of Energy and Environmental Technologies, Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Austria

EUBCE 2015 Closing Session + Conference Highlights

Don't miss the EUBCE 2015 Conference Highlights on Thursday, 4th June!

The closing session, chaired by Ingwald Obernberger, will begin with the Conference Highlights presented by David Baxter, followed by the discussion: "What could be the role of bioenergy in meeting 2030 targets and what will be the challenges?" with:

  • Heinz Kopetz, President, World Bioenergy Association
  • Jörgen Held, Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of European Biogas Association

After the discussion the Student Awards and the Poster Awards will be announced and presented to the winners by Jean-François Dallemand, European Commission, JRC, Institute Energy and Transport, EUBCE Students Awards Coordinator, David Baxter and Dimitrios Sidiras, University of Piraeus, Greece, EUBCE Poster Awards Coordinator.



Austrian Day of the European Biomass Conference

As part of the 23rd European Biomass Conference & Exhibition (EUBCE) in Vienna, the "Austrian Day" – a bioenergy technology day - will take place on 3 June 2015 from 8.30 until 18.30.

Under the patronage of the Austrian Biomass Association, the event will be run by the Austrian Centre of Excellence BIOENERGY 2020+ in cooperation with the organizers of EUBCE.

Austrian Day is supported by BMLFUW, BMVIT and WKÖ. Under the Chairmanship of Prof. Hermann Hofbauer, Key Researcher of BIOENERGY 2020+, Austrian companies and research institutes will present their "Made in Austria" innovations of heat, power and fuel production to an international audience.

In addition to the science and technology Conference Programme and the Exhibition, the EU BC&E features other 2 Parallel Events and 6 Workshops and Project Meetings. These are "conference-in-conference" events that fully address current "hot topics" in the biomass sector.

Linneborn Prize awarded to Prof. Dr. Andrč Faaij

Prof. Andre Faaij, Academic Director of the Energy Academy Europe and distinguished Professor of Energy System Analysis at the University Groningen in the Netherlands is the winner for 2015.

Prof. André Faaij is a top performer in his research areas and has dedicated most of his scientific career to the advancement of research on sustainable biomass supply. He is well aware of the opportunities and challenges of large scale biomass deployment and his focus is consistently on finding solutions to allow for a sustainable implementation of biomass supply chains. With his focus and enthusiasm for scientific research, he is a true motivator for PhD and fellow researchers, helping to boost both current and future biomass research.

He is a highly valued government advisor and contributor to IPCC, GAE, IEA, UN ( Bio-energy, UNEP, FAO, UNIDO), EC, Bioenergy industry and NGO's and more, often taking the lead in the activities. Previous positions include direction functions at the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development at the University of Utrecht.

The award will be delivered during Monday Opening.
