Dear Member of the Biomass Community,

On behalf of the scientific committee and the industry committee, I warmly invite you to be part of the 26th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition - EUBCE 2018 - that will take place in Denmark and to share your latest achievements, findings and innovations with the biomass community.

EUBCE is a world leading event in the biomass sector, sharing the latest research results, latest developments and innovative bioenergy applications from industry and the policy context. For more than 30 years, it is the interface between science, industry and policy makers, addressing the role of bioenergy at worldwide level.

It is clear that, for the mitigation of climate change and the decarbonisation of energy we need a transformation of the economy, not a marginal change. The replacement of fossil fuels and keeping fossil carbon in the ground in the shortest possible time is absolutely essential.

This brings new opportunities and challenges for development to deliver sustainable bioenergy with cost effective pathways and lower greenhouse gas emissions. There is no doubt that bioenergy has a central and indispensable role to play in this endeavour.

Bioenergy now needs a new impetus to move from sustainability debate into sustainable action based on up-to-date evidence and experience acquired. The focus is now how to achieve full bioenergy potential and better bridge the gap between research to industrial implementation. It is obvious that it is a question of how biomass can be utilised for replacing fossil fuels for renewable energy, fuels, chemicals and materials production, within the wider bioeconomy and not whether biomass should be used. For this, we need to prioritize the most effective bioenergy pathways that deliver robust GHG reductions that contributes to the climate changes goals. Solutions and strategies are needed for better integration of biomass production into food and feed farming sector and greater integration of bioenergy into the energy sector, as part of a whole broad bio-based economy.

Within this exciting and dynamic field, the conference provides a science-to-science and science-to-industry platform for knowledge exchange and interactions to discuss the latest scientific findings, industrial progress and policy landscape through keynote and plenary presentations as well as moderated poster presentations in specialised thematic sessions.

Responding to suggestions from the scientific community, the EUBCE Conference programme addresses all different subjects of the biomass sector with an updated and refined programme structure the topics addressing the latest challenges, developments and trends for bioenergy. Against this background, the EUBCE programme aims to provide insights into cutting edge research on biomass technologies as well as on the appropriate approaches to deliver sustainable bioenergy.

This year, the core of the traditional EUBCE conference will be held over 4 days; there will however be an extension to the conference and exhibition in order to show the achievements in the field of biomass utilisation technologies and supporting policies in Denmark, as well as integrating bioproducts into traditional fossil-based system, that are an integral part of the country becoming fossil-free by 2050.

The call for abstracts is open until November 6th 2017. I am confident that you, the scientific, industry and policy biomass community, will propose high quality papers and give the Scientific Committee the opportunity to select and present a Conference programme which reflects the high scientific excellence, within the wide range of topics of the global bioenergy sector.

Looking forward to building an exciting and rewarding programme for Copenhagen in 2018.
