Opening Sesion08:30 - 10:00 Scientific Opening: Industrial Demonstration and Business Concepts

Monday's scientific opening session will feature a keynote speech and three visionary presentations which will demonstrate the versatility of biomass as multi-purpose resource for energy and the emerging bioeconomy.

The keynote speech by Ingvar Landälv, Chief Technology Officer of Chemrec, will present the Status Report on Demonstration Plants for Advanced Biofuels Production. The presentation by Benny Mai, Director of Inbicon A/S, will introduce the concept of integrated utilization of residual and waste biomass for biofuels and other co-products. Dario Giordano, Chemtex, will introduce the latest advancements of PROESA, a proven technology for 2nd generation biorefineries which turn inedible ligno-cellulosic biomass into high-quality, low-cost, fermentable C5 and C6 sugars, that can then be used for the cost-competitive production of bio-based chemicals. Finally Michael Taylor, International Renewable Energy Agency, will talk about the cost-competitiveness of biomass for power generation compared to other more popular renewable sources such as solar and wind.

10:00 – 12:00 International Political Opening

The international political opening session will feature presentations by
  • Anders Eldrup, Conference General Chairman, chairman of the Copenhagen Cleantech Cluster

  • Martin Lidegaard, Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Building

  • Giovanni De Santi, Director of the Institute for Energy and Transport JRC, European Commission

  • Thomas Dalsgaard, Executive Vice-president of DONG Energy

  • Peder Holk Nielsen, President and CEO of Novozymes

  • Zhou Hongjun, Vice Dean, Professor of China University of Petroleum Beijing, NERI New Energy Research Institute

Parallel Events

In addition to the Conference Programme, the 21st EU BC&E features five parallel events and side events fully addressing current "hot topics" in the biomass sector.
  • Biomass partnerships and opportunities in Denmark
    Monday, 3 June 2013, 15.00 – 18:30, Bella Center

The seminar will high-light partnership and investment opportunities in Denmark, picturing the Danish strongholds within biomass, biogas, biofuels and waste to energy, as well as the government support and commitment to the development and demonstration of advanced technologies, including the groundbreaking symbiotic bio-refinery concept.

The side-event will showcase state-of-the art, ready-to-market technologies and cases including combustion and biogas technologies, while also demonstrating a commitment and leadership in the development of advanced biofuels, biorefining and innovative waste management technologies.

The event is organized by the Danish Bioenergy Association, Copenhagen Cleantech Cluster, the Innovation Network for Biomass and the Innovation Network for Environmental Technology, Copenhagen Capacity and Invest in Denmark.

  • Wind Power to Gas Grid + EU BC&E Matchmaking
    Wednesday 5 June 2013, 13:00 - 18:30

Power to gas is a new buzzword for the integration of renewable electricity with gas infrastructure.

Denmark has high ambitions with the unreliable wind power and for increasing the production of biogas from manure. Through methanation we can integrate these two systems into the gas grid for storage. The gas grid can then produce electricity when no winds blow or be used for the transport sector. Different technologies will be presented followed by the possibility of matchmaking.

  • IEA Bioenergy Task 32 workshop: CFD aided design and other design tools for industrial biomass combustion plants
    Thursday 6 June 2013, 13:00 - 18:30

CFD based design tools have significantly improved in the last decade and are commonly applied for larger utility boiler installations. It can lead to much better combustion quality and avoid the need of a ‘try and error’ approach for boiler design and reducing development expenses.

The workshop will be held for equipment suppliers and researchers to share practical experiences and address the current opportunities and limitations of CFD based design of industrial biomass combustion appliances.
