Dear participant of the EUBCE online 2022,

Next Monday, 9th of May 2022, it will be my pleasure to welcome you to the opening session of the EUBCE 2022!

Before we present the programme in more detail, let me point to some of the many highlights of the conference.
  • We are excited about a large number of attendees. It seems we hit your taste!
  • This is also a very warm welcome to all woman presenting in this conference, with exactly one third of all presentations.
  • We are offering a new format for the posters, called “Poster Colloquium” which will add that level of interactivity which you have missed in the past on-line EUBCEs
  • We have a new strategic partner in the Conference, the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). CBE JU is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries under Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme. CBE JU is the legal and universal successor of BBI JU. We are sure that this partnership will be essential for our expansion into wider fields of the Bio-based Economy, with a strong foothold on Europe’s initiatives.
  • Last, but not least. There will be the Giuliano Grassi Prize awarded for excellence in Biomass Industrial Deployment. This is to honour Giuliano Grassi, known to many of you not only as the founder and soul of the EUBCE, but as the most prominent driver for European Biomass R&D policy when he was with the European Commission. Altough he passed away last year, he will remain amongst us with this award.
We will feature after the Applications of Science in Industry session, the Opening Messages & the Awards, a Live Panel debate. While last year we could highlight the very dynamic political environment of the global combat against climate change well organized, this year we are facing an even more pressing energy challenge in Europe. Consequently, our panel debate The role of biomass for enhancing European energy security while ensuring sustainability

will feature the views of policy and industry representatives on biomass as a key contributor to energy independence of Europe. Whilst last year we have been pointing to the resilience in pandemic times, this year we need to touch upon the resilience during a major European military conflict.

We hope you’ll find the opening of the 30th EUBCE worthwhile to participate!
