The Giuliano Grassi Prize: a new prize for the Excellence in Biomass Industrial Deployment

Kyriakos Maniatis PhD

Former European Commission, EUBCE Industry Track Coordinator

Dear biomass stakeholder,
Dear participants in the 30th EUBCE,

The Linneborn Prize, awarded during the EUBCE events, has been established over the years as a prize for promoting innovation and excellence in the academic world. Indeed, all laureates of the Linneborn Prize have been, with rare exceptions, Professors who through their work achieved breakthroughs in bioenergy.

For the last years it has become apparent that the role of the industry in deploying biomass applications in the market must be stronger recognised by the biomass community and the industry needs to be integrated better in the EUBCE. The role of the biomass industry and its unquestionable importance in deploying biomass applications in the market is fundamental and of critical importance in any decarbonisation policy and strategy. Because of this, the EUBCE Industry Track was decided and implemented upon by the EUBCE Management.

In view of recognition of the role of the industry, the EUBCE management has decided to establish the Giuliano Grassi Prize: Excellence in Biomass Industrial Deployment to be awarded to an individual whose contribution in the industrial deployment of biomass has been exceptional facilitating market deployment of biomass. After quite some thought and search I proposed the name of Giuliano Grassi Prize in view of the contribution of Mr Giuliano Grassi had during his lifetime in the market deployment of biomass and the creation of the European Biomass Industry Association (EUBIA).

The Giuliano Grassi Prize “Excellence in Biomass Industrial Deployment” bylaws are available here

The Laureate of the Giuliano Grassi Prize will be announced during the streamed Opening Session of EUBCE 2022.

EUBCE Industry Track: Advances in biomass application deployment promotes rapid market uptake

In addition to the traditional sessions on Progress in conversion technologies, biomass crops and advanced biofuels the Industry Tracks will highlight the following:
  • Dedicated sessions on sustainable aviation fuel use in China and India
  • A session/panel on Breakthrough innovation based on EIC Accelerator Horizon Europe Programme projects
  • A panel discussion on Carbon Markets
  • A panel discussion on the Availability of Sustainable biomass in the EU towards 2050
  • A panel discussion on Opportunities and challenges for the use of biofuels in road transport
Finally, at the end of the EUBCE programme there will be a dedicated panel discussion trying to recapture the key messages from the 30th EUBCE aiming to position the role of biomass into the changing policy environment.

For more information visit EUBCE 2022 and check out the Industry track programme or the full conference programme for a list of influential moderators and panellists.
